As a member of the Local Arts Advancement (LAA) department the Membership Intern works to assist Membership staff on projects that support and promote the professional membership program composed of over 1400 arts-related and community based organizations and 1100 individuals including artists, students, arts professionals and more.


The intern will report to the Membership Marketing Senior Coordinator and will assist with customer service, records management, and other day-to-day operation. In addition, the intern will support special initiatives to recruit, retain, and serve Americans for the Arts members.


Working in the membership department provides the intern the unique opportunity to interact with a diverse cross-section of the field and will provide a bird’s eye view of the organization thanks to frequent engagement with programmatic and logistical departments. Through attendance in weekly meetings with the LAA department the intern will develop an understanding of the field training/education programs available to members as designed by the organization’s arts education, arts marketing, public art, and private sector teams.


The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong writing skills, and experience with or interest in electronic marketing channels. A successful intern will work collaboratively with the Membership Team to research trends in the membership and association fields and brainstorm ways to test and implement new strategies for reaching prospective members and stewarding the members we already have.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in weekly Local Arts Advancement Department meetings, Database/Membership meetings, and Membership Department meetings.
  • Assisting with the recruitment and retention of new and renewing members, including evaluating effectiveness of new initiatives
  • Responding to member inquiries and request for materials
  • Gathering content for the Monthly Wire e-newsletter
  • Assisting with material preparation for the Annual Convention
  • Performing quality checks of member and non-member records in net Forum, such as updating information and gathering data
  • Profiling individual and organization members for Member Spotlights
  • Assisting with subscriber management for network listservs/e-newsletters
  • Assisting with National Arts Marketing Project Conference Scholarships


  • Bachelor’s Degree (or currently enrolled in an undergraduate program)
  • Previous experience providing exceptional customer service experience  
  • Baseline knowledge of Microsoft office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to communicate and interact within a team and maintain professional behavior in an office setting
  • An interest in marketing, member engagement, and field research
